A Different Way To Build Your Business
EPISODE 063 | APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY
Something powerful became clear to me during my recent time in Nashville, where I spent several days with thirty female business owners. It's a truth I've always known, but suddenly I could see it with such clarity - and it's something that could transform how you think about your business success.
The Power of Natural Approaches
Sitting in a room with these brilliant women, representing industries from real estate to dentistry, from teaching to business support, I watched as they shared their stories and plans for the future. What struck me most powerfully was this: the most significant successes in business often come when we trust our natural ways of working, rather than trying to force ourselves into someone else's approach.
The conversations were honest, the connections genuine, and they reinforced everything I believe about running a business - that the simplest, most natural approaches often create the strongest results.
Learning From Experience
My own business journey validates this. Growing two seven-figure creative businesses from our family kitchen table didn't come from following others' rules or trying to fit into typical business moulds. Every significant step forward happened when I quietly trusted my instincts and focused on what felt natural to me.
I know some days you might feel lost in all the business noise - the constant messages about what you 'should' be doing, or complex strategies that are supposed to be the answer to everything. I've seen so many creative business owners struggle with this, trying to squeeze themselves into approaches that just don't suit them.
What Actually Works
What I know to be true, from both my experience and from working with so many wonderful business owners: when we strip everything back and focus on what actually works for us individually, that's when things start to feel easier, clearer, and yes, more successful too.
Over the past 15 years of running businesses, I've explored countless strategies and approaches. I've read the books, listened to the podcasts, and tested various methods. I love new ideas and approaches - I'll properly geek out over new technology and concepts. But what I've realized is that my greatest successes have come from taking the simpler, more natural approaches:
Small, considered steps that feel right
Being really clear on who I wanted to work with
Speaking directly to them
Deeply understanding what they need and want
Finding ways to help that align with my own skills and strengths
The Transformation
What's remarkable is watching what happens when business owners start trusting their own thinking and ensuring everything they do aligns with who they are and where their natural strengths lie. When they realize they can question rigid approaches, when they start making decisions based on what actually works for them - the change is extraordinary. Not just in their confidence, but in how their businesses begin to flow more naturally.
Real Examples of Success
Looking at my own business decisions:
Choosing what felt right and practical over traditional design rules
Signing a significant contract with one of the world's leading department stores while still operating from our kitchen table
Taking on the challenge of designing wedding flowers for one of the most notable weddings in the world
These weren't decisions I made by following any standard business playbook - they came from careful thought, deep instinct, and quiet determination.
Trust Your Instincts
Perhaps my boldest move was choosing to step away from my floristry career when I was at its absolute peak. Many people thought I was making a mistake, but I knew, deep down, that it was time for a change. That decision to trust my instincts, even when it went against conventional wisdom, led me to where I am now - doing work that feels even more meaningful and aligned.
What This Means for You
If you've been feeling almost guilty for wanting to do things differently, if you're worried you're missing something because you're not following the standard approaches - you're not alone. That discomfort you might be feeling about all the rigid business advice out there? It might actually be telling you something important. It might be your instincts pointing you towards what actually works for you.
There's a real difference between doing something that feels challenging but right, and forcing yourself to use approaches that feel fundamentally wrong.
Moving Forward
I encourage you to spend some time this week simply thinking about your business. Not planning or strategizing, just honestly considering what feels right and what doesn't:
Which parts of your business energize you?
Which decisions have led to your best results?
What approaches feel natural to you?
Often, when we quiet all the external noise, we already know what works - we just need to trust ourselves enough to act on it.
Building a business that works for you, that feels aligned with your values and natural way of working, isn't just a nice idea - it's a genuinely practical approach to creating long-term success. It's about creating simple, effective systems that help your business run smoothly, without overcomplicated strategies that drain your energy and enthusiasm.
Your Natural Way Forward
Going forward, you'll hear me speak more about this approach. Not because it's a new strategy to follow, but because I believe so strongly in helping creative business owners build genuine success their way. I've seen too many brilliant people doubt themselves because they're not following the typical path, when actually, that different approach is often their biggest strength.
