There’s a feeling I hear about in almost every conversation I have with established creatives. You’ve built something real. You’re good at what you do, and you’ve worked hard to get here. And yet somewhere along the way it’s started to feel heavier than it should… busier, more complicated, harder to think in. The strangest part is that adding more, another offer, another platform, another clever strategy, never seems to lift the weight. More often it adds to it.

I find it helps to picture a room. One you’ve spent years filling, where every piece is good and has a story behind it. You chose each one for a reason, at a time when it made sense. But there’s so much in there now that you can’t move through it properly, you can’t see the things that actually matter, and the whole room feels heavy. When it’s a real room, we know exactly what to do with that feeling. We set aside time, we sort through it, we make the charity-shop pile, and we take things out until we can breathe again. A creative business fills up in just the same way… piece by piece, on top of a centre that was never quite made clear.

But here’s where we treat a business differently from a cluttered room. When it starts to feel heavy, we almost never clear anything out. We add. We reach for more at exactly the moment the feeling is asking us for less. Because that’s the industry’s answer to nearly everything. Stuck? Post more, show up more, build another funnel. It’s advice that assumes the problem is volume. And for most established creatives, the problem was never volume.

What’s so often missing is a clear centre to run everything through. I’ve found it comes down to just three things… who you really are in your work, what your one thing actually is, and who it’s truly for. Once that’s clear, you finally have something to measure everything else against. All the advice and ideas and courses you take in, you can actually filter. This fits. This doesn’t. This one isn’t for me.

And a few things shift. Your own voice becomes your strongest marketing, the way you talk about your work when you stop performing and simply tell the truth about it… the part nobody can copy. Marketing stops being a code you’re forever trying to crack and becomes plain common sense. And the part that surprises people most: once it all lines up, the effort comes down. You do less, and more of it works. I learned that the long way round, building my own business from a kitchen table to seven figures, working with the likes of Dior, Alexander McQueen and the Royal Family. The businesses that thrive are the clear ones, almost never the busy ones.

So here’s one small thing to try this week. The next time you sit down to work on the business, before you ask what else you could add, ask the opposite. What could I take away? What could I make clearer? You don’t have to act on it. Just notice what the question shakes loose.
